"Black Madonna" 24x36

Erika Vazzana is a local Artist from Riverside. She works with both residential and commercial clients in the Chicagoland area painting custom commissions, murals and more. She has been painting for 21 years and loves her job but her true masterpiece is her family!

Black Madonna is our beloved Mother and Child, Blessed Virgin Mary. A depiction in Christian imagery but the Black Madonna is highly regarded among Polish people as our mother who was burned, stolen and left with rips in the canvas hence scars on her cheek. The legend of the story was the picture hung in a church in a small village in Poland called Częstochowa, it was burned down and remaining was her painting. When thieves still attempted to steal the painting ironically they were slashed themselves and died.  I choose to paint this, as being of Polish decent and raised by a Polish mother means the world to me. My hardworking Grandmother, Babcia came to this county with nothing raising 9 children. My mom was raised with work ethic and values that I in turn now raise my 3 children with. More importantly with the Grace of Faith and and “dirty beauty” of what being a mother really is.
